Low Carbon Expertise
Low Energy Retrofit
The Low Energy Victorian House in Camden was the first council house to achieve 80% emissions reduction and led to the Whiscers Retrofit for the Future project which reduced the cost of solid wall insulation and, crucially, allowed residents to stay during retrofit. This used 3D laser surveys and off-site cutting to reduce insulation time per room to about three hours.
These projects pave the way to the large scale retrofit of UK buildings needed to meet carbon reduction targets.

High rise cavity walls
Using abseiling to fill cavity walls reduced the use of scaffolding and cut access cost for difficult to treat blocks. The Laystall Court project was the first time abseiling was used and resulted in a new industry and greater competitiveness in the insulation industry.

Insulated infill
This project turns two end of terrace houses into a continuous terrace and cuts the heat loss from two buildings at once. It demonstrates the site specific opportunities for emissions reduction.

Royal Free CHP
A major opportunity existed to use waste heat from the CHP system in the Royal Free Hospital to heat 1500 dwellings. The project will save about one megawatt of energy that would otherwise go to waste and give residents cheaper heating.

Green Procurement & Materials selection
In a new build house Porotherm insulated clay blocks were used for their lower embodied energy (707 MJ/m2) compared to aircrete blocks and PIR insulation (795 MJ/m2) at the same time as being cheaper, faster build and crucially providing a more reliable quality of insulation and air tightness.
The importance of evaluating embodied impact of the materials and services are recognised, and required to calculate of Scope 3 emissions which includes emissions from transport and manufacture of materials.

Low Energy House
This house uses highly insulated Porotherm clay blocks with about a third the embodied carbon of conventional UK cavity wall construction. The blocks also take less than half the time to build and are much easier to check for quality. The high insulation combined with renewables, mechanical heat exchange ventilation, wood stove and rainwater recycling allow this house to approach Passivhaus standards.

Green Roofs
This green roof provides insulation and cooling to the day care centre below and visual amenity to the elderly residents above.
Work with industry resulted in independent evidence that green roofs last much longer than the 25 years of standard flat roofs.
Green roofs are one of the most effective way for cities to adapt to climate change by reducing temperature of the urban heat island and by reducing rainwater runoff during storms.

Draught Busters workshops help people to take control of their heating by helping them to draught proof their homes.
On a wider scale, "nudge" techniques using information on individual and neighbourhood fuel consumption has been shown to achieve a 9% reduction in Camden.
